William "Bill" Johnson, 93, of Chattanooga, peacefully passed away on Sunday, February 12, 2023, surrounded by his immediate family.

Born to the late William and Narcissus Johnson in Newport, TN, he lived in Red Bank, TN most of his life.  He was preceded in death by his brother, Fred Johnson; sister-in-law, Billie Johnson, and nephew, Alan Johnson.

Bill was a quiet and caring man who had an abundance of friends.  He was a member of Hixson United Methodist Church and since 1974 volunteered at the Highland Plaza United Methodist Preschool as their "handyman" and Charter Board Member.  He proudly served in the United States Air Force, 39 ^th Air Rescue Squadron from 1948 – 1956 during both the Berlin Airlift and Korean Conflict.  Bill was a past president of the local Sertoma Club and was a member of the American Legion Post 14 and VFW Post 4848.

When not working or doing for others, Bill loved fishing, hunting, raising bird dogs, playing a round of golf, and gardening.  He was known by many for his green thumb and could grow the best tomatoes and most beautiful flowers, both of which he loved sharing with his friends.  Most of all he just enjoyed being "Papaw" to his only grandson over the last 30 years.

Survivors include his loving wife of 65 years, Betty Johnson; daughter and son-in-law, Amber Cambron and Scott Slatton of Ooltewah; grandson Zachary Cambron; and niece and husband, Cristi and Cliff Harding.

The family would like to thank the nursing staff at Hearth Hospice for the loving care and support they provided Bill and his family in the final week of his life, particularly Amanda and Cassey.

The family will receive friends on Friday, February 17, 2023, from 4:00-7:00 pm, at the Hamilton Funeral Home located at 4506 Hixson Pike.

Graveside services will be held at the Chattanooga National Cemetery at a later date.
