Terry Needham
He leaves (somewhat temporarily) his wife and soul mate, Ann. What they built together was always going to be too brief- but what a time they had! Terry was father to Helen Zapol (Columbus, Ohio) and to Paul Needham (plus Cindy, Sophie, and Simon), Cincinnati. Also (via Ann), to Deb and Aiden Douglas, plus Joe in St. Louis and David, Jen, Savannah and Jack Touhill in Phoenix. He leaves family in the UK: brother-in-law Peter Halls, in Essex County. Nephew and nieces in the UK: Allison, Andrew, Denise, Liz and Wendy- and more family in Australia. All these wonderful people and Ann's extensive family- Jeanne (Tom), Tom (Gunnel), John (Jean), Carolyn (Mike), Steve (Mary), Cathy (Bill), Elizabeth, Nancy (Richard).
Terry was preceded in death by his mother Alice, father George, sister Pat and brother Brian-all of the UK. He remained in close contact with boyhood friends from Church and high school for more than 65 years and saw them all in the UK, usually annually. He was fortunate to maintain friendships with many of those generous colleagues/friends with whom he had worked, taught and lectured.
A native of the UK, his bioengineering background at St. Mary's Hospital in London introduced him to noninvasive testing in the peripheral vasculature. He became more interested in using the equipment with patients than in its design and construction and, from hereon, he concentrated upon the noninvasive diagnosis of peripheral vascular disease. This resulted in the publication of 20 original research papers and book chapters, several professional awards, plus more than 500 national and international oral presentations. He was a Fellow and past Board member of the Society for Vascular Ultrasound, a Board member of the Intersocietal Accreditation Commission for Vascular Laboratories and Chair of the Vascular Physics Task Force of the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (an international testing body). He had taught at and had been on the Advisory Boards of the ultrasound program at Chattanooga State and at NW GA Tech., Rome, GA. Terry was Director of the post-graduate course in peripheral vascular ultrasound at Wake Forest University in Winston Salem, NC, from 1983-2013. He loved to teach-professionally, perhaps his greatest love- and had more patience with others than he had with himself.
Strange, but he enjoyed physics. (Well, even he never claimed to be absolutely normal).
He loved to build (and sometimes, necessarily, to rebuild) things around the home, to polish the car(s) and relax with a glass of wine. He and Ann traveled widely, enjoying his photography with the ever-present camera, whilst visiting family & friends. This enabled Ann to fill yet another album with printed memories, plus he enthusiastically assisted with enhancing her collection of wine labels. He loved life and he loved his life. He had numerous computers, from which he attempted to learn patience and expertise, (although neither of these qualities ever became obvious).
Terry was a long time Board member and Deacon of Ashland Terrace Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Chattanooga- where he found peace and other worshipers who became almost as close as his own family. He was private about his dedication to religion.
A memorial service will be held at 3:00 P.M. Tuesday, December 14, 2021 at Ashland Terrace Christian church with Pastor Tom Banks and Pastor Caroll Wallace officiating.
