Robert D
Monroe
Jun 29, 1928 — Jun 4, 2024
Robert D Monroe, 95 passed away June 4, 2024. He was born in Chattanooga TN on June 29th, 1928. He was born to a large family, the youngest of 8 kids. He went to work when he was 13 years old to help support the family.
Even at an early age, a young pretty neighborhood girl named Sue Willhoit that lived 3 blocks away caught his eye. They went to school together, attended the same church and their families knew each other. Even then they felt as though they were "meant to be" together. They started dating and remained close even when he joined the Army in 1945.
Robert went through basic training in Fort Sam Houston, Texas. Later on, his whole unit was transferred from the Army to the Air Force. He was deployed in 1946 e He and was stationed in Taejon South Korea as the Korean War was breaking out "down the road" (his words). His "tour of duty" ended in 1949 when he received an Honorable Discharge. While in the military he received the "Army of Occupation Medal" and also the WW2 Victory Medal.
In the army Robert discovered that he had a propensity for health care and specifically wanted to pursue a career in Pharmacy. Noticing his desire to follow a career in medicine, the Army moved him to the 89th Station Base Hospital Pharmacy in South Korea as a Pharmacy tech where he stayed until his discharge in 1949.
Upon returning to the United States, Robert attended College at Medical University School in Memphis. He qualified for the HPSP (Health Professionals Scholarship Program) which meant that the US government was covering the cost of his continued education. He completed the equivalent of 6 years of Med School and received his "Doctor of Pharmacy Degree", became a Pharmacist and returned to Chattanooga to chase his lifetime goal of caring for people, and was respected and admired by all of those he served.
Shorty after, he reunited with Sue and they were married on Sept 12th, 1954. 5 years later their 1st son Bob was born and 5 years after that along came son number two Marc. Robert retired in 1991 after nearly 40 years of being a Pharmacist. He was very active with his sons and taught them how to fish and played tennis with them even after retirement. Robert and Sue were always supportive and encouraged their sons to follow their interests; Bob (Sports) and Marc (Music).
He was preceded in death by his parents Gerome and Alice (Dobbs) Monroe, 5 borthers, Warren, Ed, Dunn, Raymond and Harold and two sisters, Mae and Pauline.
Now, years later, he is survived wife, Sue of 70 years, 2 sons, (Bob and wife Cheri, and Marc and wife Lorraine), 5 Grandkids (Keeli, Marissa, Shelbi, Sarah and Mason) and 3 Great Grandkids (Amelia, Michael and Vayda). Robert was a "family first" man who loved his wife Sue fiercely and unconditionally until his passing. His legacy will continue long after his passing.
Robert and Sue were married for 70 years and were lifelong Christians who were devoted to their church and God and lived their lives in service to him. They sang in Church choirs together for 75 years, and also touched many lives with their duets which they sang at several different churches across the region.
Visitation will be held at Hamilton Funeral Home Saturday, June 8, 2024 from 1pm until funeral service time at 2pm. Private burial will be at Chattanooga Memorial Park Cemetery.
