Obituary

R. Bruce Wilkey, of Signal Mountain, passed away Tuesday, November 8, at a local healthcare facility.

Bruce was born in Lafayette, Alabama on January 16, 1948. His parents who predeceased him were Eugene B. Wilkey and Emelee K. Wilkey.

Bruce attended Signal Mountain Elementary, but near age 11 Bruce and his parents moved to Saint Louis, Missouri where he continued his education at Saint Louis Priory, graduating in 1966. He then graduated from Saint Louis University with a degree in geology. In early 1970s Bruce returned to Signal Mountain and became involved in the Chattanooga Chapter of the Sierra Club, the Emma Belle Miles Audubon Society, and Tennessee Ornithological Society, among others, lending his support of the environment in many public hearings. In the late 1970s Bruce moved to Nashville where he was employed with the State of Tennessee in its Tennessee Heritage Program. It was in the Sierra Club that he met his wife, Mary Anne (nee Huber), and they married in May, 1979 with Bruce returning to Signal Mountain. When the Chattanooga Nature Center was built, Bruce was named Chief Naturalist. In 1983 he and Mary Anne welcomed a son, Keith. In the early 1980s Bruce became interested in Civil War history primarily through his friendship with the late local writer and historian E. Raymond Evans and assisted Mr. Evans in several of his writings. During this time Bruce became involved with the African American History Museum and, with Mr. Evans, contributed writings to the historical archives. These included historical findings about the blues legend Bessie Smith. His most recent historical accomplishment was his participation in the development of the Charles H. Coolidge Memorial Plaque on Signal Mountain. Nature photography, particularly wildflowers, was always a favorite past time and Bruce entered several local photography exhibits where he received Honorable Mentions and other awards. Bruce held various positions in a career in computer technology. Prior to his retirement he worked as Damage Investigator for Phoenix Loss Control.

Survivors include his wife of 43 years, Mary Anne, son Keith, brother-in-law Joseph Huber (Susie), and sister-in-law Lydia Weathersby, nephews Mark Huber (Dawn) and Greg Huber (Caryn), and several great-nieces and a great-nephew.
