Obituary

Nancy Kellogg Anderson, 94, of Signal Mountain, passed away peacefully on February 9, 2021.

She was born Nancy Ann Kellogg in Atlanta, Georgia and grew up primarily in Cincinnati, Ohio. She graduated from Ward-Belmont Preparatory School in Nashville, Tennessee and completed a Bachelor's Degree in History at the University of Cincinnati. From 1949 to 1953, Nancy taught at a girl's college in Lahore, Pakistan with a Methodist Church mission program. She earned her Master's Degree in Social Work at Nashville College of Social Work. While there, she met John M. Anderson, a musician, and played violin with the Nashville Symphony.

John and Nancy married and had two children, Stuart and Betsy. After several moves, they lived in Fayette, Missouri where Nancy worked for the county welfare office. The family moved to Independence, Missouri, where Nancy was a deputy juvenile probation officer. She also continued playing violin with community orchestras, visited seniors in a nursing home with the Red Cross, and was a docent at Vaile Mansion. John and Nancy were very active in the Swope Park United Methodist Church in Kansas City, Missouri. John passed away suddenly due to a heart attack in 1979. Nancy then volunteered with Habitat for Humanity and spent a year in Americus, Georgia.

In 1997, Nancy moved to Chattanooga, Tennessee to live with her dear friend Claire Hale. She again was active in the community, volunteering as a scene shop artist with the Chattanooga Theatre Center, playing her violin with various groups, hiking with the Cumberlands Hiking Club (until she was 88), and being active in the UUCC Church. She also continued to travel, including trips to Ecuador and India. At age 89 she retired to Alexian Village in Signal Mountain. Nancy will be remembered for her wit and generosity to those in need.

Nancy is survived by her son, Stuart (Brenda) and their children Ken and Katy (James); her daughter, Betsy Anderson Henderson and her two children Alexander and Leslie; and her sister Susan Kellogg.

Nancy will be buried next to John in Independence.

A Zoom memorial service will be held by the UUCC. Visit UUCC.org. For donations in her honor, family suggests the Hunter Museum or the Chattanooga Theatre Centre.
