Obituary

Merle "Colonel" Johnson Lindsey, 90, passed away peacefully at home in the presence of friends, family and loved ones on Saturday, October 22, 2022 after a brief illness.

Born on March 27, 1932, Merle was raised in Erie, Pennsylvania and was known by most through his nickname "Colonel" which was given to him by his older brother when just a new-born. "Colonel" became a widower three years ago, after 64 years of marriage to his wife, Dona.

Merle was a fine athlete; was an all-conference high school offensive and defensive end in football, guard in basketball, track high jumper and catcher on the baseball team. He was also the Home-coming King. While in the Marine Corps he received an active-duty battlefield appointment to Sergeant, in charge of an artillery unit, while serving overseas during the Korean War. He retired in Chattanooga, three decades ago, after a full, successful career serving as Human Resources Manager for several Singer related companies, Cobble Industries and Northrup-King. Being musically inclined, and learned to play the guitar, piano and accordion, all by ear. An avid golfer, Merle "shot his age" numerous times on various local golf courses during his 25 years of retirement. "Colonel" enjoyed a full, long, active life that was well spent … he will be missed.

Merle was preceded in death by his father, Edward Lindsey; mother, Myrtle Johnson Lindsey; and brother, William Lindsey. Survivors include his three children, John (Carolyn) Lindsey; Jennifer (Vernon) Harrison; Gail (Michael) McDade; four grandchildren, Tyler, Lindsey, Alex, and Monica; as well as a number of great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Funeral services with full military honors, will be offered at 11 am on Friday, October 28, 2022 followed by interment, all at the Chattanooga National Cemetery.

Arrangements are by Hamilton Funeral home 423-531-3975.
