Obituary

Lucille Caroline Jackson nee Krueger began her journey in Buckhorn, Missouri. According to the legend herself, the doctor and her father did a little too much celebrating, and her birth certificate bore the brunt of it. She spent the rest of her extraordinary life with two different birth dates, both August 6 th and August 7 th , 1931.

Named after her favorite aunt, Lucy spent her early childhood running wild and free (and barefoot) with her five brothers, one sister, cousins and friends. She met the love of her life, Tom Jackson (Papa), in St. Louis when she was twenty-five, and they went on to have three girls, Catherine, Stephanie and Helenoel, despite Papa's fervent desire for a boy.

Affectionately known as Nana by those who loved her most, she lived life on her own terms. She spent the majority of her time taking care of her family, moving in elderly relatives, providing home-cooked food or keeping her rowdy grandkids out of trouble. At a time when being handicapped was a stigma, Nana made it normal; and she didn't tolerate anyone treating it like it wasn't. Her daughter Steffy benefited from her perseverance, both in and out of the education system. She set the standard for all differently-abled children to go to mainstream school until age 21 in Omaha, NE, and she established after-hours classes for post-graduate students.

Things we'll always remember about Nana:

  • How family-oriented she was
  • Her love of bling, bling and more bling
  • Her turkey gravy
  • How we'd have to roll her out of the restaurant after she got that extra shot in her margarita
  • The candy jar she kept stocked in the front hall
  • Her fried chicken
  • The speedo she bought for her oldest grandson, and fully expected him to wear
  • Her fried chicken
  • How much she loved Steven Seagal movies and Rod Stewart music
  • Her fried chicken

Nana loved the sunshine, traveling backroads, her Missouri cousins, decorating for Christmas, and baby back ribs. She knew no strangers and kept many lifelong friends despite moving around due to her husband's military career. One of her best friends, Elaine Johnson, has been making plans and cutting up with her for sixty years.

Nana passed away at home on Mother's Day, surrounded by her loving family.

She was preceded in death by her parents, siblings, husband Tom and daughter Steffy, and she leaves behind a long list of children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, cousins and friends. She will be forever loved.
