James Gibson
Buyer
Jun 12, 1931 — Jan 3, 2024
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of James Buyer, a beloved husband, father, Bompie, and friend. He peacefully left this world on January 3rd, surrounded by loved ones.
Jim was born on June 12th, 1931, and lived a life filled with love and Christian joy. He was a devoted husband, a loving father, and loyal friend to many. His kindness, warmth, and unwavering support touched the lives of all who were fortunate enough to know him.
Jim grew up in the Chicagoland area, with siblings; Barabara (Ward) Powers, Marjorie (Jim) Davis, MaryEllen (Paul) Harshbarger, Margaret (Allen) Girnus, and John (Nan Doelling) Conley.
He served in the US Navy and trained as an Electrician's Mate during the Korean Conflict, completing several Mediterranean tours. Jim graduated from the University of Illinois with a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering. He retired from Northern Indiana Public Service Company/NiSource in 1994 as Assistant to the CEO where he also worked in Strategic Planning, and as Training Center Manager.
He married the love of his life, Barbara Louise Loeffler on September 4th, 1954, and leaves behind a lasting legacy through their children; Valerie (Lanny) West, James (Lisa) Buyer, Lori Pantale, Kathryn (Mike) Bruce, Christopher (Susan) Buyer. He will be dearly missed by 19 grandchildren: Jonathan, James, Nathan, Samuel, James II, Jordan, Caleb, Sara, Ian, Gabriel, Emily, Ethan, Elijah, Elizabeth, Elysia, Evan, Madison, Jonathan, Anthony, and 28 great-grandchildren!
Jim was passionate about worship, musical instruments, horseback riding, and skiing. He loved sailing, boating and spending time on the lake with his family. It was serving the Lord, however, and being of service to others that defines his life and leaves an indelible example for us all. He served in leadership roles with Community Bible, Grace Baptist, Liberty Bible, and Valleybrook Churches as Sunday School Teacher/Superintendent, Deacon, Elder Board and with the Choir. Jim volunteered in numerous capacities including serving alongside Barb at Joni & Friends Family Retreat, and ministering at nursing homes, hospitals and hospice centers with his dulcimer group.
A brief service will be held at the National Cemetery with military honors on Friday, January 19th at 11:00am. The celebration of Jim's life will be held on Saturday, January 20th at 2:00pm at Valleybrook Evangelical Presbyterian Church (6001 Hixson Pike, Hixson, TN 37343), with a time of family visitation preceding.
The family extends our heartfelt gratitude to the entire staff at Hospice of Chattanooga and to all those who have offered love and support during this difficult time. Your kindness is deeply appreciated. In lieu of flowers please make donations to Kuyamba Ministries www.kuyambaministries.com or to Hospice of Chattanooga.
Until we see him again in glory, Jim's memory is forever alive in our hearts.
