Obituary

Ilien Farley Causby passed peacefully on July 1, 2020. A private graveside service will be held at the Chattanooga National Cemetery on July 6, 2020, Father Michael Nolan of St. Thérèse of Lisieux Catholic Church will be officiating the service. There will be no public visitation.

Ilien was born in Los Angeles, California on January 7, 1931, to Dorothy and Luke Farley, joining older siblings Adrian and Dottie Ann.  After two years in California, Ilien lived the rest of her life in Chattanooga where she enjoyed spending time with her extended family of aunts, uncles, and cousins. She attended Notre Dame High School, and in 1949 she married William Narramore. Together, they had four children. They divorced in 1958, and in 1960 Ilien married Hugh (Dill) Causby from Dalton, Georgia. They had three children together.

Ilien was a beautiful woman with a smile that sparkled. In her early 20's she cut her black hair into the popular pixie style and kept it that way her entire life. She had a wonderful sense of humor and loved parties. Her children's friends always considered her to be the "cool" mom because of her ability to relate in a genuine way to young people.

When Ilien met Hugh she had four young children, and although Hugh was a bachelor and had never married, he was captivated by Ilien and fell in love. After they married, it wasn't unusual for them to tell secret jokes at the dinner table while their children begged to know what they said. They remained best friends and soul mates until Hugh passed away in 2018.

Always responsible and loyal to family, she invited her mother and older sister to live with her when they were having financial challenges. At one time, there were a total of ten people, a dog, and a cat living in the house. She loved animals and probably would've had more pets if Hugh had agreed.

Ilien was a great Southern cook, and everyone in the family looked forward to dinnertime. She prepared meals from scratch almost every day of the week, and to this day all of her children use her recipes. Her daughter, Dana, compiled her favorite recipes into a cookbook for family and friends, and her granddaughter, Caitlin, commemorated Ilien's cooking in her song, "Greasy Southern Cooking." Green beans and creamed corn, fried okra in the pan. But nothing satisfies that craving like fried chicken can.

No one can take the place of Ilien, and her family will miss her greatly.

Several beloved family members passed away before Ilien, including her precious children, Gray Narramore, Lynn Narramore, and Michael Causby; grandson Peter Gallagher; husband, Hugh Causby; mother Dorothy Weidner Farley; father Luke Farley; brother Adrian and sister Dottie Ann.

She is survived by a large group of loving family members and cousins including her children Kathy Narramore (Craig Ryan), Dana Narramore Gallagher (Peter), John Causby (Jinoy), and Richard Causby (Kirsten); her grandchildren Kenneth Narramore, Eric Narramore (Felicia), Sam Narramore (Shantal), Jessy Ryan Kidd (Bryce), Caitlin Ryan Frye (Graham), Maeve Gallagher, Michael Causby, John Dillon Causby, AJ Rodriguez, Caden Causby, and Dillon Causby; and seven great-grandchildren: Lilli, Zachary, Porter, Molly, Cedar, Ava, and Autumn.

The family would like to thank the staff of The Crossings at Webb Bridge Road in Alpharetta, Georgia, for the wonderful care given to Ilien.
