George "Shuford" Johnston, Jr., age 88, of Chattanooga, passed away on Sunday, June 21st, 2026.

He was born on May 5, 1938, to the late Mary "Holly" Johnston and George S. Johnston, Sr., and raised on Lookout Mtn. Shuford was truly a man for whom God broke the mold.

Known for his famously gruff, unmistakable voice, Shuford had a larger-than-life personality. He was quick with a nickname for everyone he met and was rarely seen without a loyal, loving dog by his side.  An exceptionally talented marksman, Shuford shot skeet and clays for the United States Air Force as a 1st Lieutenant. He came incredibly close to competing in the Olympics.

In the 1970s, he brought the excitement of motorcycles to Chattanooga by opening Super Toys. He later delighted local food lovers by founding Shuford's BBQ. Shuford then transitioned into a successful career as a developer and contractor on Signal Mountain, shaping the local community by developing the Rolling Meadows, Poplar Knob, Windtree, and Briar Branch (Mowbray) subdivisions.

Shuford lived the bachelor life for over 40 years before finding his perfect match and marrying in 1984 to Nancy Johnston.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his stepdaughter, Marion Lee Baker.

His memory will be cherished by his devoted wife, Nancy Pruett Johnston; his sister, Charlotte J. (Gene) Brown and his stepchildren, Kelly Brock and Frank (Anna) Baker. He is also survived by his beloved grandchildren, Austin Stephens, Logan (Bailey) Stephens, Baker (Elle) Brock, Mary Alice (Oliver) Mitchell, Summer (Mathew) Russell, Charlie Baker and Suki Baker, along with many adored nieces, nephews, and great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 1:30 -2:30 PM Friday, June 26, 2026, immediately followed by a service to celebrate Shuford's remarkable life from 2:30 -3:30 PM in the funeral home chapel.
