Elizabeth
Martin
Aug 5, 1959 — Oct 24, 2022
Elizabeth Anne (Betsy) Martin passed away peacefully on Monday, October 24, 2022 at the age
of 63, with family members at her side. Betsy was born on August 5, 1959 in Pensacola, Florida
at the Naval Hospital to parents Judith A. Martin and Frank B. Martin, JR.
Betsy was preceded in death by her father, Frank B. Martin Jr. and her brother, Frank B. Martin
III. She is survived by her mother, Judith A. Martin, sister, Amy Martin Smith, daughter, Elsie
Caroline Martin, and grandson, Maxwell Prince Cayce, nieces Maggie Shipley and Catie
Shipley, nephew Joseph Martin, uncle Ronald E. James, and cousins David James, Peggy
James, John James and their families.
Betsy spent the first 8 years of her life in Melbourne, Florida and moved to Signal Mountain,
Tennessee in 1967. She attended Signal Mountain schools then graduated from Red Bank High
School in 1977.
After a few years living in Iowa, Betsy and her young daughter moved back to Signal Mountain.
In 1987 she obtained her Associate of Science Degree in Nursing with honors from
Chattanooga State alongside her sister. Her 35 year nursing career began in Augusta, GA
where she worked in the neonatal intensive care unit and later transitioned to long term care.
The peak of her career was serving as the Director of Nursing for Life Care Center of Red Bank.
Betsy was active in the Signal Mountain community. She served on the board of the Signal
Mountain Small Business Association, the SM Playhouse where she also helped create props,
and was a lifelong member of St. Timothy's Episcopal Church. In 2017 she earned the
certificate in Education for Ministry (EfM) through The University of the South School of
Theology. This certification enhanced the care she could offer her beloved patients and also
helped to instill her strong faith in her grandson Max.
Betsy had an innate curiosity for traveling, creating, and learning. She enjoyed many exciting
trips throughout the US, Mexico, and Europe. In 2020 she embarked on a 4 thousand mile road
trip to visit her niece Maggie in Wyoming. Driving through the Rocky Mountains alone in ten
feet of snow was no problem for Betsy. Hot coffee, snacks, books on tape, and singing in the
car was all she needed to keep moving forward. In the summer she liked taking Max on
vacations to the beach and was thrilled at every opportunity to see the US Navy Blue Angels
practice and airshows. She was a creative cook, often giving the most complicated recipes to
Elsie and she loved cooking for Joseph who she thought was always hungry. Betsy enjoyed all
sorts of projects and loved creating art with Catie, her 'personal Sunshine'. She loved camping,
trout fishing at Tellico, flat water sports, and spent most evenings with her mother Judy
exploring new places.
The family would like to graciously thank all nurses and staff at Life Care Center of Red Bank for
providing unconditional love and care to Betsy during her time there. To the many friends who
sent their love and prayers during her illness, we are forever grateful.
A funeral service followed by a reception in the parish hall will be held at 11:00am on December 3, 2022 at St.
Timothy's Episcopal Church, 630 Mississippi Avenue, Signal Mountain, TN 37377. In lieu of
