Calvin Bernard
Chamberlain
Dec 12, 1939 — Nov 11, 2022
Calvin Bernard Chamberlain, Jr. of Chattanooga, TN, 82, died Friday, November 11, 2022 surrounded by his family following a valiant battle with prostate cancer that started some 20 years ago.
He was born in Salem, MA to Dr. Calvin Bernard Chamberlain Sr., MD of Westwood MA and Edna Bertani Lamson Chamberlain of Norwood, MA. Cal lived in Topsfield, Marblehead, and Salem before his family moved to southern California in the summer of 1946. As a boy, Cal was an active member of the Boys Brigade, attended the Pilgrim Congregational Church, and enjoyed eating corn pancakes for breakfast, riding "the dips" in his dad's Cadillac convertible, working on "hot rods" with his neighborhood friends, and restoring his Model T that he drove around town. He spent summers at camp in Wrightwood, CA, back east with his cousins, and working on various manual labor projects in the orange groves around Pomona and at his father's hotel in Palm Springs. He graduated from Pomona HS in 1958 and attended Parsons College in Fairfield, Iowa. He was an active and highly respected member in the Phi Sigma Epsilon Fraternity and was always fixing or building things. He graduated in the class of 1962 with a degree in mathematics before starting a career in the emerging field of computer science as a Systems Engineer.
Following college, he worked for General Dynamics to develop the tracking systems for the Apollo 4 mission - the first "all-up" launch of the Saturn V rocket. He went on to work as an analyst, manager, and VP of Research and Development advancing telecommunication systems and automating manufacturing processes in the carpet industry. A career problem-solver, Cal eventually shifted his focus from carpet and consulting work to developing a new solution for "personal transportation". As the Founder/Inventor/CEO of The PT Solution, he successfully built a team and launched a start-up company that is now funded and actively working to bring SNAAP Transportation to market.
Cal's professional opportunities also took him to various parts of the country. From San Diego, CA to Boston, MA where he and Corrine both lived and worked as young professionals. They met at a ski resort in New Hampshire and were married in 1968. Next, they moved to Rochester and then Schenectady, NY where they welcomed three daughters into the world in sequential years - "triplets the hard way". A move to Atlanta was next in 1981 and finally to Chattanooga, TN in 2009. Cal was always proud of all 4 of "his girls".
After the initial diagnosis and treatment, Cal had a long remission period until 2017 when surgery was scheduled to remove a small mass from his lung. More aggressive chemotherapy wasn't needed until June 2020 when scans showed the disease had spread to his liver. The last year had been especially difficult with recurring infections and hospital visits, but he enjoyed working on SNAAP and having lunch with his brother Curt every day, and he had more good days than bad ones. Ever the optimist, Cal had just begun a new cancer treatment at the end of October fully expecting that he would continue to enjoy time with his family, many more SpaceX rocket launches, fried clams in Maine next summer, and the completion of his SNAAP Transportation test and demonstration system by the end of the year.
He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Diane Beebe of Rancho Cucamonga, CA whose memorial service he attended and spoke at in October 2021.
Cal is survived by his loving wife Corrine Elizabeth Chamberlain (Ness). They celebrated their 54 th wedding anniversary in Hawaii in May 2022. He is also survived by his three adoring daughters and their families: Christen and Ryan Courville (Audrey, Bryce, Acadia) of Midlothian, VA; Carolyn and Brian Marek (Abby) of Roswell, GA; and Connie and John Wise (Maddox, Sergeant, MaryLocke, Hayden and Hannah) of Chattanooga, TN; his devoted brother, business partner, and daily lunch companion Curt Chamberlain and his family of Chattanooga, TN; and his dear sister Karen Davis and her family in Upland, CA.
The family would like to thank Dr. Davey Daniel and the team at Tennessee Oncology who always took such loving and capable care of Cal. Dr Daniel attentively listened to SNAAP updates while waiting for lab results or reviewing the latest scan and thoughtfully considered and responded to endless questions about treatment options, side effects, and new drug trials. Both he and Cal appreciated the science and research behind the medical advances that extended Cal's life and sustained the quality of these last couple of years. For that we will be forever grateful.
The Chamberlain family will be remembering and celebrating Cal with a visitation at Hamilton Funeral Home service on Saturday, November 19 th from 1:00pm until 2:00pm with the funeral service starting at 2:00pm.
Everyone is invited to an open house reception to follow services at Connie's house.
In lieu of flowers, Corrine would love to hear from you with a card, story, or special memory you shared with Cal. If you prefer to make a financial donation, please support SNAAP Transportation and Cal's vision for personal transportation. You can also see a recent video with footage of Cal talking about SNAAP on the Home page at www.RideSNAAP.com.
