Brenda Sherryl
Nunn
Jan 22, 1950 — Feb 24, 2026
Hixson
Brenda Sherryl Nunn, a resident of Hixson, TN, died on 24 February 2026, after long illness. Brenda was born on Jan 22, 1950, at "Baroness Erlanger Hospital". Her beloved parents were Louis Nunn and Lela Tennyson Nunn. She was born into a large southern family with numerous aunts, uncles and cousins, shaped by many gatherings, reunions, and family singings. Brenda grew up in the then- new East Brainerd area, attending schools built to accommodate the Baby Boom she was part of, saddle oxfords to Beatles. She was privileged to spend many summers in and around Lake Ocoee through the YMCA, swimming and canoeing and acting as camp counselor there.
Brenda graduated from Tyner High School in 1968, and the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga with a B.A. in English Literature in 1972. She studied further at Middle Tennessee State University. She worked for 19 years in sales and tourism fields, notably at the Chattanooga Convention and Visitors Bureau. She moved to Nashville for 6 years to work at her beloved Tennessee Arts Commission. She changed careers with a 1993 Nursing degree from Chattanooga State, working in that field until her 2015 retirement. Her last 17 years of employment were as a case worker and appeals manager at Unum Provident.
Brenda was famous for her friendly demeanor, joyful spirit, and an active social life that was only slowed in the past few months by ill health. Her superhuman ability to read the slightest social cue was both a blessing and a curse. Through several years of declining health, she ruthlessly persisted in daily walks with her dog, Emma, doing them both much good. Her cat, Bradley, was disinterested. She took great joy every day from her home garden and bird feeder, zealously keeping the latter full. Brenda loved the New Yorker magazine, good prose, the color purple, and her well-thumbed Bible. She was a great patriot who deeply loved her country, followed its politics, and was a stalwart of the local Democratic Party. Brenda was an active member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, a devotee of both the performing and visual arts, and a faithful attendant of many decades at St Paul's Episcopal Church. Her monthly lunch group of long- time friends has continued for three- plus decades. Brenda led a full and active life surrounded by friends. She remained faithful to her God to the end, rejoicing always.
She is survived by many devoted friends and numerous cousins, including her cousin Faye Tennyson Levi Daffron. Her special relationship with her Cousin Lisa and Lisa's husband Mike Shillinger continued to her death.
Brenda's funeral will be Friday, March 13th at 1:00 pm, with visitation beginning at 11:00 am. It will occur at St Paul's Episcopal Church,305 West 7th Street, Chattanooga, TN 37404, with the internment of ashes afterward.
Philippians 4: 5-7: "Rejoice in the Lord always! Let your gentleness be known to everyone. The Lord is near. Do not worry about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made know to God."
